Narrowing My Topic

March 6, 2007 at 10:17 am (Uncategorized)

I picked my controversial topic because I am majoring in elementary education.  Foreign adoption concerns many lives of children everywhere in the world.  I am interested in children and that their needs be met.  I want to focus on adoption of children from all countries, but I do not know if this will make my topic too broad.  I can also include a comparison of how many and how often children are being adopted from other countries.  I will also explore how well foreign adoption is working for other countries.

I will also look at the flip side to see what the cons of adopting are, but support those with arguments.  Establishing all the pros and cons of people adopting foreign children can be one of my main body paragraphs.  I will also want to explore how many gay and lesbian couples are adopting foreign children and how they have turned out.  I will want to follow up on some of the lives of children who have been adopted and how their lives turned out.  For the better or for worse.

Starting out, i will give history and factual evidence of how foreign adoption has developed over the years.  I will also consider what other celebrities, normal people, and adoption agencies are saying about my issue.  Then I can support my side with what I have found and create a well developed foundation.  This time though, I am not going to stir away from my topic.  I will need to be more focused in on what I am trying to prove.

Do you think this will be narrowed down enough to create a 8-10 page paper? or is it too narrow?

What specific aspect of foreign adoption will you be looking into? Are you going to focus your paper on the political reasons why people adopt outside of the country? Will you examine what red tape people have to go through in order to adopt within the country? This would make your essay more argumentative (to take a stand, for example, that our adoption laws need to be changed so that more of our own children are being adopted). As it stands, I’m still afraid that your essay is going to be more informative than argumentative

I think that a lot of people should know what it takes to adopt a child in a foreign country. My mother and her old boss went to the Ukraine to adopt a little girl. I remember her saying how much of a disgrace that the place she was living was. The children were fed gruel( I think that’s how you spell that) for every meal and even though little Alison ( that is what she was named) was 2 she was still sleeping and spent most of her time in a crib. It wasn’t until Alison came back over here with them that she has put on weight and her hair has finally started to grow. I think this is a wonderful topic to inform people how things are and not just as easy as the celebrities make it look.

I have always wanted to understand the reason for Americans going over to foreign countries and adopting kids. In high school my Spanish teacher and her husband adopted a little girl from China. My teacher loved the little girl as if she had her herself. They even decided to make sure that the girl learned her native languge. I also agree that this is a good topic to research and have answered. I would like to hear reasons as to why people are adopting from foreign countries when there are so many children in America that need to be adopted.
