Homosexual Marriages
Throughout history, individuals have been persecuted for their sexuality. It has become even more common today. These videos are great examples of what people think about homosexuals. The appeals in these videos stand out and are what make the movies have an impact on their viewers. Some of these videos made it clearer for me to see the discrimination that still goes on today.
In the first clip, Homophobia & Homosexual Discrimination Must Stop, used pathos to portray his feeling about this issue. It was very dramatic with the emotional music and questions such as, “Why?…” that appealed to the audience. By using Logos as well, this clip went straight to it’s main point, which was that discrimination needs to stop and shouldn’t be happening because it hurts the people that are involved. I was impressed with how he plainly asked the audience why are we being this way and what’s the point in our prejudice against this group of individuals. I thought that this video was very impressive and grabbed my attention immediately with the music and the consistent questions. This was an impressive depiction of how people really feel on this subject. It was well thought out for the most part, especially coming from a person who shares strong feelings about this subject that was all in all one-sided.
In the next video, Homophobia is Gay,definitely made an impact on what these people are experiencing. By using Logos, the creator gave pictures and instances of people who have been effected by the discrimination. They were real life people who have been banished from homes and even died because of their sexuality. Ethos and pathos were also shown, especially how the author pulled me in with the example of the kid who was killed by his football team. That was so emotional and brilliant to show what he went through, just a normal person who died because of how they feel sexually. This is ridiculous and no one should ever have to go through something so horrible. I wouldn’t change this video at all, because it completely got its point across.
In Liberty Sunday, the director only used ethos throughout the clip. The news castor and governor were the only two credible people shown. The information was limited to what they researched and what they thought, or were told to think on the subject. This could have had more thought put into in, maybe some actual people explaining their feelings or the news castor going into more depth. This was a pitiful depiction of what our society thinks about homosexual relationships.
Last was C38themovie. This had actual people on the streets responding to questions concerning the gay population. I was really surprised on what some of them thought about marriage. I am especially gung-ho about people getting married and sharing that special relationship with someone you love. By using logos, the director showed people opinions and how the law disagrees with gays getting married. The priest’s response was a shocker, because I thought that most priests disagreed with this kind of marriage. Pathos, was shown by the school teacher and her comment on her “special needs” child in her classroom. I thought she was very bias, because we don’t have to treat people differently in the way she explained. Of course, special needs children need more care, but they shouldn’t be given less opportunities. The director could have had more opinions from the street on this subject. It seemed two sided, but one side was shown more often and I know that there are more people out there that feel differently on this subject.
Basically, my opinion is that people should not be persecuted for how they sexually feel. They make this decision on their own and every decision has an outcome. We should not discriminate against, but I still have no opinion on homosexual marriages. This is just how I feel. Though I do believe that we should not be prejudice even though it happens all the time and will always occur no matter what we do. A world with no discrimination is a Utopian world.
Marijuana and YouTube
Both articles, written by Tim Wu and Monroe Anderson portray important matters in the United States. Though each author takes a different approach towards their matter, they both prove their sides to be valid.
Anderson takes a more direct point of view when describing the importance of legalizing marijuana. He is completely pro this cause and his opinions show in what he writes. But, Wu starts by stating facts about You Tube and how it is doing good, what most people believe is not the case. They both support their reasoning but Wu takes a more two sided opinion by not really taking a stand on the situation.
Both writers give vital explanations and facts to support their theories. Their statistics and up to date information proves that they are familiar with what they believe should take place. By being very informative, they both persuade their readers into thinking they should side with them.
Mainly, in Wu’s writing he explains how YouTube has found a way to be better than Napster. He states that it is not illegal what they are doing on YouTube, so it is a new and improved edition to the Internet. He also points out that most people believe it has some copyright dilemma. This is not the case. It is doing way better than Napster ever was.
On the other hand, Anderson brings about the subject that we are spending more money locking criminals up for marijuana then need to be. In actuality, we could be making a profit and increasing out economy by legalizing this narcotic.
Personally, I found the article supporting marijuana a lot more interesting. Mainly because Anderson gives facts on how we will benefit if the law were to pass. He tells how other states legalize even harsher laws with threatening circumstances. But, Wu goes into detail comparing Napster to YouTube, just telling the facts not something that will effect the people around us.
Even though both authors present reasonable information, I would have to agree with Anderson more. His article intrigued my interest and captured my attention right off the bat, because it presented something I could relate to. I already believe marijuana should be legalized, and this article pushed me over the top. YouTube is an important matter, but not as important as the world’s growing economy. Marijuana has been debated all over the world for so many years. Wu could have grabbed my attention more if it wasn’t so broad and over done. If he could explain how more people agree with what he has to say, I would be more enclined to see where he was coming from.
Hybrid Dilemma
During my first semester at this University, I was told to write an informative essay concerning Hybrid cars. I was to compare them to SUV’s and why I would choose them to commute from school everyday.
This assignment was especially difficult because there was only a minute amount of research for the cars. Each website I observed basically covered the same material. So, I them proceeded by interviewing actuall people to see what their opinions were on Hybrid cars. This was an even better source because it was up to date and sometimes the internet has false information.
Since I had to go through all that trouble, I was able to realize that it takes effort to create a well thought out comparison essay. Now, my writting is more polished since my first semester, and I thank my teacher for pushing me to create something I can be proud of .
